Excerpts from Quran: Test and Trial
- Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives and the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere.
Who say: when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah we belong and to Him is our return."
Al-Baqara - 2:155-156 - Or do ye think that ye shall enter the Garden (of Bliss) without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? They encountered suffering and adversity and were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger and those of faith who were with him cried: "When (will come) the help of Allah?" Ah! verily the help of Allah is (always) near!
Al-Baqara - 2:214
- Ye shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and ye shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if ye persevere patiently, and guard against evil, then that will be a determining factor in all affairs.
Aal-e-Imran - 3:186
- He it is Who hath placed you as viceroys of the earth and hath exalted some of you in rank above others, that He may try you by (the test of) that which He hath given you. Lo! Thy Lord is swift in prosecution, and Lo! He verily is Forgiving, Merciful.
Al-Anaam - 6:165
- It is not ye who slew them; it was Allah: when thou threwest (a handful of dust) it was not thy act, but Allah's: in order that He might test the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself: for Allah is He who heareth and knoweth (all things).
Al-Anfal - 8:17
- And know that your possessions and your children are a test, and that with Allah is immense reward.
Al-Anfal - 8:28
- When trouble toucheth a man, he crieth unto Us (in all postures), lying down on his side, or sitting or standing. But when We have solved his trouble, he passeth on his way as if he had never cried to Us for a trouble that touched him! Thus do the deeds of transgressors seem fair in their eyes!
Yunus - 10:12
- Then We made you heirs in the land after them, to see how ye would behave!
Yunus - 10:14
- They said: "In Allah do we put our trust. Our Lord! make us not a trial for those who practise oppression;
"And deliver us by Thy Mercy from those who reject (Thee)."
Yunus - 10:85-86 - Lo! We have placed all that is in the earth as an ornament thereof that We may try them: which of them is best in conduct.
And lo! We shall make all that is therein a barren mound.
Al-Kahf - 18:7-8 - Nor strain thine eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to parties of them the splendour of the life of this world, through which We test them: but the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring.
Ta-Ha - 20:131
- We appointed immortality for no mortal before thee. What! if thou diest, can they be immortal!
Every soul must taste of death, and We try you with evil and with good, for ordeal. And unto Us ye will be returned.
Al-Anbiya - 21:34-35 - And the messengers whom We sent before thee were all (men) who ate food and walked through the streets: We have made some of you as a trial for others: will ye have patience? For Allah is One Who sees (all things).
Al-Furqan - 25:20
- Do men think that they will be left alone on saying "We believe" and that they will not be tested?
We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.
Al-Ankaboot - 29:2-3 - When some trouble toucheth man he crieth unto his Lord, turning to Him in repentance: but when He bestoweth a favour upon him as from Himself, (man) doth forget what he cried and prayed for before, and he doth set up rivals unto Allah, thus misleading others from Allah's Path. Say "Enjoy thy blasphemy for a little while: verily thou art (one) of the Companions of the Fire!"
Az-Zumar - 39:8
- Now, when trouble touches man, he cries to Us; but when We bestow a favour upon him as from Ourselves, he says "This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge (I have)!" Nay but this is but a trial but most of them understand not!
Az-Zumar - 39:49
- Man does not weary of asking for good (things), but if ill touches him, he gives up all hope (and) is lost in despair.
Ha Meem As-Sajda - 41:49
- Man does not weary of asking for good (things), but if ill touches him, he gives up all hope (and) is lost in despair.
When We give him a taste of some mercy from Ourselves, after some adversity has touched him, he is sure to say "This is due to my (merit): I think not that the Hour (of Judgment) will (ever) be established; but if I am brought back to my Lord, I have (much) good (stored) in His sight!" But We will show the Unbelievers the truth of all that they did, and We shall give them the taste of a severe Penalty.
Ha Meem As-Sajda - 41:49-50 - Then, is it to be expected of you, if ye were put in authority, that ye will do mischief in the land, and break your ties of kith and kin?
Such are the men whom Allah has cursed, for He has made them deaf and blinded their sight.
Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up by them?
Muhammad - 47:22-24 - And verily We shall try you till We know those of you who strive hard (for the cause of Allah) and the steadfast, and till We test your record.

- We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.
Al-Hadid - 57:25
- O ye who believe! Truly, among your wives and your children are (some that are) enemies to yourselves: so beware of them! But if ye forgive and overlook and cover up (their faults), verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Your riches and your children may be but a trial: but in the Presence of Allah is the highest Reward.
